TURKOMAN
Turkestan, the home of Turkoman rugs, was the homeland of the tough, hardy and semi-nomadic Turkoman people. They were divided into many different tribes including the Tekke, Yomut, Salor, Ersari and Chodor, to name a few, and they were all great exponents of the weaving art. Not only did they create floor coverings but also small bags, animal trappings and wall and door hangings. The variety of types and frequent alternation of style in design makes this a particularly intriguing group.Collectors of Turkoman rugs are probably the strongest and largest group of rug enthusiasts, and the headway made in research of the complexities of this type of weaving is unequalled by that in any other area of carpet study.
